Holiday 25 Package Design Trends

Overview

A part of the package design industry is keeping up with current and upcoming trends for each season. Creating a packaging trend includes research focusing on what color palettes, patterns, icons, materials, and more are trending for that season. Using this research, I create a logo and mood board that embodies the theme of the trend and showcase it onto the packaging I design.

Trend Design Process

After researching, I choose a focus point and a selection of colors that will be the most prominent. I then design a mood board to help customers visualize the trend. Naming the trend to correlate to the theme helps immerse you completely into the theme and it gives the packaging a logo so customers can see where their logo would be displayed and how the packaging can be customized to fit their brand. For holiday, I created and designed two different trending brands because of the difference in colors and styles.

When designing the trend, I gather some patterns and icons to have a variety of inspiration and ideas. I start with creating dielines of what packaging products I will design. This way I can create an assortment of packaging concepts and tailor the packaging to products appropriate to the season. For example, creating more giftable packaging items for resale and winter clothing/accessories are fit for the winter/holiday season.

Trend 1 - Stardust Soiree

Stardust Soiree beautifully captures the otherwordly magic of the holiday season with its enchanting celestial designs. This trend makes use of mixed metallic and shimmer finishes contrasted against richly colored matte papers to create a high end and elegant look and feel. Adorning your packaging with applied plaques, ribbons, and 3D printed foils adds further dimension and provides an elevated unboxing experience. This palette showcases an opulent collection of rich jewel tones, perfect for brands looking to add a sense of luxury to their holiday packaging. The dominant shades of midnight blue, plum, and burgundy serve as the perfect backdrops for luxurious metallic foils, while golden amber and muted sage bring in the warmth.

Trend 2 - Humble Hearth

Humble Hearth pays homage to time-honored folk art and the rich culture behind modern winter traditions. Hand drawn scandinavian and nature inspired patterns ground this trend, aiming to create a meaningful human connection between maker and consumer. Lush elements like velvet ribbons, tassels, flocking, and brushed metallic finishes add a layer of old world elegance. The palette is rustic yet refined featuring natural hues of mulberry wine, olive, and crushed cherry offset by peach and brown butter. These shades create a cozy atmosphere that captures the feeling of a winter’s eve spent by the hearth side. Whether woven together with intricate patterns or natural Kraft papers, this collection of colors provides an artisanal feel perfect for brands that embrace traditional craftsmanship.
